COLDWATER SHUFFLEBOARD CLUB
4th ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING September 17, 2009 The final day of shuffling for 2009 was September 17. There were about 85 people present and some others arrived for the banquet. We had about 118 people attend the banquet. We had ELM cater for the banquet and once again it was superb and thoroughly enjoyed by all. The meeting was held before shuffling this year and President Gary Pipher called the meeting to order at regular shuffling time of 1:00 P.M. Motion by Joe Morfitt and seconded by Keith Lawlor that we dispense with reading the minutes and accept them as posted on the web site. Carried. Message from the President. President Gary Pipher started by welcoming everyone here today and thanked them for taking part in the Coldwater Shuffleboard Club. We are just completing our 4th year and our club is now the largest in Canada and it is also the envy of many other clubs. The success of the Coldwater Club is the result of many great people and there are several individuals that I would like to personally thank. George O'Reilly for taking the club photos again this year and for printing the 8 x 10 photos that many of you purchased. The money from the sale of these photos has been donated back to the Club by George. George also took photos of the Provincial Teams at the recent Inter Provincial Tournament and gave each team member an 8 x 10 copy as a souvenir of the very first Inter Provincial Tournament. George is also heading up the Winter Shuffleboard in Coldwater again this year. It is scheduled to begin on October 20, 2009. Thank you George. Bob Read is a new comer this year and he is to be congratulated for all the things both he and his wife Linda do around the club. Bob arranged for the entertainment on the boat cruise and it was through their generous donation that we had the professional keyboard player and band leader to provide the great entertainment on the cruise. Bob also turned the money he paid for the cruise back to our Club and the draw prizes today are a part of his generosity. Bob is also chairman of the nominating committee and will give us a list of candidates later in the meeting. Tom and Joyce Kidd Thank you for the great job again this year in looking after the catering for the CNSA doubles tournament in May. There isn't a tournament anywhere in Ontario that can compete with Coldwater when it comes to hospitality and great food. Joyce and Tom are also to be congratulated for their special work in creating harmony and fellowship in the Coldwater club. Their grandson Scott is always a pleasure to have at our club and is no doubt material for a future champion shuffleboard player. Leo Fowler for seeing that each and everyone receives a tag as they enter the door. It is so important for everyone to get a number tag, because it allows us to know how many players show up and how many courts we need, or how many white sticks to add. That may not always be perfect because we do screw up from time to time but we always manage to get it sorted out somehow. Bill Kinnear and Jake Dykersterhuis who we always seen cleaning and polishing the discs at the end of each day, and yes there are others that have taken part as well and I want to thank all of you for pitching in. Pat Neipage, Bob Wilson, Bev Fowler, Doris Bumstead, Isobel Matthews and Bob Read who clean the brushes and wash the scoreboards each week. I know I am probably missing some and I want to say thanks to everyone. Ross Matthews is always the first person to lend a hand at whatever job is to be done around here, from sweeping courts to cleaning and sifting beads and especially for looking after the court sticks each week. Ross is always the first one to sit out a game when there is an uneven number of players for the courts. Lorraine Pollock for looking after all the tournaments we had this year and for keeping things rolling smoothly on our Fun Days, and for doing such a great job as secretary in recording the minutes from all our meetings. Bill Pollock for manning the BBQ and serving up almost 100 hamburgers on Fun Day and he is another person always on a broom or dust pan cleaning up the beads. Keith Lawlor for his donation of chairs once again this year. Thank you Keith. Doris Bumstead, Nancy MacLean, Lorraine Pollock and Isobel Matthews for counting the cash each week from the coffee donations . Our treasurer insists on having the coffee fund money counted and checked each week by two other people and have them sign the entry slip that goes into the bag with the money, Special thanks to each and every one of you who has brought baking and other treats for our coffee time each week. We appreciate your generosity and this is what makes our Club so special and allows us to enjoy a social time after the games. I might add that if you missed out on the opportunity to have signed up for the treats this year maybe next year you can join in. Doris Bumstead has donated several cases of pop throughout the year and we thank her for that. Bill Pollock, George O'Reilly, Ross & Isobel Matthews, Nancy MacLean, Doris Bumstead, Pat Neipage, Bev Fowler, Marie Kinnear and of course Barb Pipher, these are the people who stay behind each week to clean up the clubhouse. These people always see that the washrooms are cleaned after each days use and make sure there are plenty of paper product available. They also see that the garbage is collected and put out in the collection bins. Barb Pipher, Linda Read, Isobel Matthews and Bev Fowler these are the ones who make sure we have coffee and treats ready and out on the tables when you are finished playing. I know I am missing some but you know who you are and I want to thank you for all that you do. John and Ria Wilson I want to thank for the fantastic job they did in getting the major sponsor of Ted Burton Financial for our Doubles Tournament in May. I also want to thank everyone who canvassed for sponsors for this tournament. John and Ria Wilson I want to thank also for the beautiful flower arrangements they made up for each of the tables for our banquet. Last but not least I want to thank Barb Pipher for all she does for the shuffleboard Club. She makes sure we have someone lined up each week to bring treats and if we are short she will quickly order up a batch or two of cookies from the Pillsbury dough boy in the kitchen. Barb looks after buying all the necessary supplies and keeps a sharp eye out for places that have water/soft drinks and other items on at special prices. Barb is a member just like each of you but I don't believe she has played more than a couple of games all year. She puts the clubs needs first and I would hate to tell you how much time she spends looking after the clubs finances. We had a lot of activities this year and each and every function must balance to the penny. This type of volunteer work is what makes our Shuffleboard Club so special and makes a person proud to be a member. Doug Bell - We lost Doug this year. Doug was one of our original members and we will miss him around here. I want to thank the members who went to the funeral parlor and supported Lottie in her time of bereavement. I want to thank Lottie for all the coffee she and Doug donated to our Club over the past 4 years and now Lottie has donated 2 of Doug's shuffleboard cues to our Club in his memory. We ended the 2009 season with 134 members and although sometimes we may have to sit out a game because there were more than 64 players show up. It is rather difficult to limit the number of club members. If we were to put a deadline or a limit on the number of members I know there would be a lot of disappointments. There are not too many of us that would like to hear someone say you are unable to join because our club is full. Some of the proceeds from the coffee fund went toward the purchase of the 4 new fans, some went towards subsidizing your meal here tonight. The actual cost of your meal is $15.00 and you as a member have paid only $10.00. Your Club has picked up the additional $5.00 of that cost. We had a fully paid BBQ on one of our Fun Days with hamburgers, drinks and ice cream etc. and that was also paid for out of the coffee fund. Then there was the membership subsidy of those who took part in the Ontario Shuffleboard Tournaments. This was done to encourage more activity in the tournaments and it appears to have gone over very well. Your Club also paid $3.00 of the $5.00 cost for your name badge. This is just some of the ways in which your donations each week to the coffee fund are utilized besides paying for the refreshments that are purchased in the first place. The $15.00 yearly membership is rather inexpensive when you consider the amount of games we play twice a week from May until September and I don't believe we need to raise the membership fees for next year. Treasurer's Report Barb Pipher reported total income $13,670.86 and expenses of $9,914.68 leaving a net balance of $3,756.18. The books were audited by Lorraine Pollock and Joyce Kidd. Joyce read a report saying that everything was in order to August 31, 2009 and the books balance to the bank's August 31, 2009 statement. Motion by George O'Reilly and seconded by Ross Matthews to accept the audited report. Carried. Having no Old Business we moved on to the Election of Officers. Chairman of the Nominating Committee - Bob Read announced the names of the 4 people for Directors. George O'Reilly, Doris Bumstead, Lorraine Pollock and Bob Read. He asked 3 times for nominations from the floor and received no names. Nominaations for Director were closed and the 4 above people are the directors for the 2010 season. Secretary - Bob announced that he had a name for secretary, Beverly Fowler. He asked for nominations from the floor. Receiving none he announced that Bev was our new Secretary. Treasurer - Bob announced that Barb had agreed to stand again for treasurer. He asked for nominations from the floor and receiving none announced that Barb would be our Treasurer. Vice President - Bob announced that Ross Matthews would stand for re-election to the position of Vice President. He asked for nominations from the floor and receiving none announced that Ross would be the Vice President. President - Bob announced that Gary Pipher would stand for re-election to the position of President. He asked for nominations from the floor and receiving none announced that Gary would be our President. Gary received a standing ovation. Officers for 2010 President Gary Pipher Vice President Ross Matthews Secretary Beverly Fowler Treasurer Barb Fowler Directors George O'Reilly Doris Bumstead Lorraine Pollock Bob Read President Pipher said he wanted to personally thank each of you for accepting the position you were elected to. Next year we will be going in to our fifth year and we can look forward to improvements and ways that will satisfy our membership. Winter Shuffleboard George O'Reilly is again looking after the Winter Shuffling. Everything is scheduled to start on Tuesday October 20th at 1:00 P. M. and run until March 20th. George has borrowed a roll out court from the OSA to make a total of 5 courts now. New Business - President Pipher had Coldwater pins made and we sold them today at $1.00 each. Bill Pollock had some Coldwater stickers made and distributed to all at the banquet. Adjournment - Motion by Doris Bumstead and seconded by Bill Pollock to adjourn. Carried. President Pipher announced that everyone had been given a ticket when they purchased their banquet ticket. They are for draws that will take place later at the banquet. Don't Lose your ticket. We will now move out to the courts for our three games of shuffleboard and be finished in time for our banquet at 5:00pm . I do hope we see each of you back again next year or possibly in Florida over the winter.
